Cabin Crew Layover Guide: Making the Most of Every Stopover
One of the greatest perks of being cabin crew is the layovers. Getting paid to spend time in some of the world's most incredible cities — it never gets old. But making the most of a layover takes a bit of know-how, especially when you're tired from a long flight and only have a limited window of time.
Here's my tried-and-tested guide to layovers, built from years of experience in cities across the globe.
Know Your Layover Length
Before you plan anything, know exactly how long you have. A short layover (under 12 hours) means you need to be strategic. A longer layover (24+ hours) gives you real time to explore. Factor in travel time from the hotel to the city centre — some crew hotels are far out.
Rest First, Explore Second
This sounds counterintuitive, but it's the most important rule. If you're exhausted, a few hours of sleep will make your exploration 10x more enjoyable. Set an alarm, rest, then go. You'll thank yourself later.
Research Before You Fly
I always research my layover destination before I leave home. I have a list of go-to things for each city I visit regularly — the best coffee spot, the must-see landmark, the local market. A little preparation goes a long way.
Travel Light on Layovers
Leave your big bag at the hotel. Take a small daypack with your essentials — phone, wallet, water bottle, a light jacket. You want to move freely and quickly.
Eat Like a Local
Skip the tourist restaurants near the hotel and find where locals eat. Ask hotel staff for recommendations — they always know the best spots. Some of my most memorable meals have been in tiny local restaurants discovered on layovers.
My Favourite Layover Cities
- Dubai: The mall, the creek, the gold souk — endlessly fascinating even after many visits
- Singapore: Gardens by the Bay, hawker centres, and the cleanest city in the world
- Cape Verde: Beach, fresh fish, and the most relaxed atmosphere imaginable
- Amsterdam: Canals, museums, and incredible cycling culture
- Bangkok: Street food, temples, and the best massages in the world
Layover Safety Tips
- Always let someone know where you're going
- Keep a copy of your hotel address in the local language
- Use reputable taxis or ride-share apps
- Don't flash expensive jewellery or equipment
- Trust your instincts — if something feels off, leave
