Best Beaches in Cape Verde — A Cabin Crew Guide

Cape Verde's Best Beaches — Picked by a Cabin Crew Professional

Cape Verde is one of Africa's most beautiful island destinations, and its beaches are a huge part of the appeal. From calm, turquoise lagoons perfect for swimming to dramatic, wind-swept Atlantic shores ideal for surfing — there's a beach for every type of traveller.

As someone who has visited Cape Verde many times, I've had the privilege of exploring beaches across multiple islands. Here are my personal favourites.

1. Santa Maria Beach, Sal

This is the classic Cape Verde beach experience. A long stretch of white sand, calm warm water, and a lively beach town behind it. Perfect for families, couples, and solo travellers alike. The water is shallow and safe for swimming, and there are plenty of beach bars and restaurants nearby.

2. Chaves Beach, Boa Vista

If you want dramatic, unspoiled beauty, Chaves Beach on Boa Vista is breathtaking. Miles of golden sand with almost no one on it — this is the kind of beach you dream about. It's also a nesting site for loggerhead turtles, so you may be lucky enough to spot them.

3. Tarrafal Beach, Santiago

Tucked into a sheltered bay in the north of Santiago island, Tarrafal is a hidden gem. The water is crystal clear, the village is charming, and the atmosphere is completely relaxed. A must-visit if you're exploring beyond the tourist trail.

4. Laginha Beach, São Vicente

Located right in the city of Mindelo, Laginha is a convenient urban beach with a great atmosphere. It's popular with locals and has a lovely promenade. Pair it with a visit to Mindelo's vibrant market and music scene for a full cultural experience.

JJ's Top Tips for Cape Verde Beaches

  • Always bring reef-safe sunscreen — the sun is strong year-round
  • The best swimming conditions are on the leeward (western) sides of islands
  • Visit between November and July for the calmest seas and best weather
  • Hire a local guide for beach trips on less-visited islands
