Here are 10 things I wish someone had told me before my first visit.
1. You Need a Visa
Most nationalities require a visa. Apply online at least 2 weeks before travel.
2. The Islands Are Very Different
Sal and Boa Vista are beach-focused. Santiago is cultural. Sao Vicente has the best music scene.
3. The Currency Is the Cape Verdean Escudo
CVE is the local currency, but Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas.
4. It's Windy
Trade winds are strong, especially November to March.
5. The Food Is Incredible
Try cachupa, fresh grilled fish, and tuna pastries. Eat where locals eat.
6. Inter-Island Travel Takes Planning
Book domestic flights and ferries early.
7. It's Safe With Common Sense
Generally safe for tourists. Keep valuables secure.
8. Don't Drink the Tap Water
Always buy bottled water.
9. English Is Not Widely Spoken
Portuguese is the official language. A few basic phrases go a long way.
10. Book Experiences in Advance
Whale watching and catamaran trips sell out fast.
